Forget the lolly-water bottlings of yore – New Zealand is now producing some enchanting rosés. More than 100 are on the market, perfect for summer sipping. When buying pink, always go for the latest vintage – freshness is the essence of the wines’ appeal. Served gently chilled, rosé is unbeatable as a picnic wine and magical served with salmon.

Amisfield Saignée Rosé 2012
From pinot noir grapes, estate-grown in the Cromwell Basin, this is an instantly engaging wine. Bright pink, it is full-bodied, with fresh, vibrant, strawberry and spice flavours, strong and smooth. $25 (4/5)

Maori Point Central Otago Pinot Noir Rosé 2012
This delicious, bright-pink, mouthfilling wine was grown at Tarras, north of Lake Dunstan. Buoyantly fruity, it is dryish, with generous red-berry, plum and spice flavours, full of youthful charm. $20 (4/5)

Neudorf Pinot Rosé 2012
From pinot noir grapes, hand-picked in the Upper Moutere hills, this unusually full-bodied (14% alcohol) dry rosé is described by the producer as a “French style”. It’s a distinctive, full-flavoured wine, “serious”, yet light and refreshing. $23 (4/5)

Wooing Tree Central Otago Rosé 2012
Estate-grown and hand-picked at Cromwell, this pale-pink, pinot noir-based charmer is mouthfilling, with good intensity of fresh, strawberryish, spicy, slightly peachy flavours. $25 (4/5)

Fresh and lively, this bright-pink/ pale-red wine has generous berry and spice flavours, dryish and smooth. (3.5/5)

Tohu Single Vineyard Nelson Pinot Rosé 2012
Pale red, this full-bodied wine is buoyantly fruity and smooth. Estate-grown at Upper Moutere, it has fresh, berryish aromas and flavours, a gentle splash of sweetness balanced by appetising acidity and plenty of drink-young appeal. $22 (3.5/5)
