Seinfeld rebooted for the 21st century

by Toby Manhire / 17 December, 2012
A rapidly growing Twitter account offers modern-day synposes for the beloved sitcom.
Famously, it was “a show about nothing”, but Seinfeld was very much an expression of the 90s.

Running over nine series from 1989 to 1998, the sitcom became enormously popular in the US and beyond (although bizarrely remained a niche taste in Britain).

It has been widely suggested that the comedy of Jerry Seinfeld and his fictional friends Kramer, George and Elaine couldn’t quite work in an age of mobile phones and the internet and all that.

But a new Twitter project sets out to prove otherwise, proffering a series of episode synopses for “Seinfeld Today”. Sensibly, it’s called @SeinfeldToday, and has amassed more than 200,000 followers in the week since it was invented.

(Update, via @theegonomist: the account seemingly picked up on a Twitter hashtag, #updatedSeinfeld, to the frustration of some.)

Jack Moore, a sports journalist, Seinfeld junkie and co-creator of the account, told the Atlantic:

I'm pretty much constantly watching episodes in the background while I'm doing anything. I have a thumb drive with the whole series on it that I keep in my bag pretty much all the time ...

People always say that 'if they had cell phones Seinfeld couldn't exist, which is true for a certain type of Seinfeld episode, but not as a general rule (which I think the account shows).

Some of the best tweets so far:

George's new gf (Casey Wilson) convinces him to try Zumba. Jerry considers an offer to host a reality show. Kramer starts pickling things.

The Mitzvah Tank won't leave Jerry alone. George's Facebook gets hacked. Kramer emails with an actual Nigerian prince.

Elaine refuses to recycle in attempt to attract the attention of her cute garbage man. Jerry's new gf (Julie Bowen) constantly says "LOL."

George goes crazy trying to figure out how long to wait before texting a woman. Kramer and Newman try to make an app.

George "accidentally" sends a "reply all" e-mail in an attempt to get fired. He is promptly promoted for his gutsy attitude.

Jerry's beautiful girlfriend (Kelly Macdonald) dumps him after Jerry, on George's insistence, uses an emoticon in a text.

Kramer gives Ted talk full of nonsense words, gets a standing ovation. George discovers that there's a gay porn star named George Costanza.

Elaine is caught on video laughing at 9/11 memorial. @Gawker posts it & turns her into a pariah. Kramer claims to have invented the Snuggie.

Elaine has a bad waiter at a nice restaurant, her negative Yelp review goes viral, she gets banned. Kramer accidentally joins the Tea Party.

Elaine joins JDate so she pretends to be Jewish. She meets an amazing guy who dumps her for being "too Jewy." George discovers falafel.

Seinfeld might have pre-dated the widespread use of mobile phones, email and the rest, but it was not without its jokes on technology. For example:
