ANNA KARENINA
Tom Stoppard’s brilliant screenplay is fleshed out by such excellent directing, production design and supporting actors that even Keira Knightley, tightly clenched as Tolstoy’s tragic Anna, can’t drag the film down. 4/5

HITCHCOCK
Two fine performances with nowhere to go. Anthony Hopkins is the master of suspense, Helen Mirren is his wife, and Sacha Gervasi is the director who renders them yawn-worthy. 3/5

LINCOLN
A far more intimate and tightly focused study of the great American president than you’d expect from Steven Spielberg, and all the better for it. Hugely entertaining. 4/5

SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK
A sentimental romcom thinly disguised as an edgy mental-health drama. Jennifer Lawrence (always good, superb here) and Bradley Cooper (turns out he can act) are great fun as the leads. 3.5/5

THIS IS 40
A meandering, wildly uneven examination of the upper-middle-class midlife crisis, via Judd Apatow, who has done better work. Unfocused, whiny, occasionally hilarious. 3/5
