Seven Psychopaths

THE IMPOSTER
A little gripper of a doco that throws an unsettling light on heartland America. 4/5

JACK REACHER
Hey, Cruise is okay. A solid action and retribution thriller. Werner Herzog pops up, evilly. 3.5/5

LIFE OF PI
Yann Martel’s philosophical concern – “Putting ourselves at the centre of everything is the bane of theologians as well as zoologists” – isn’t expressed entirely satisfactorily, but it’s undeniably breathtaking to look at. 4/5

SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS
It probably looked great on the page and in the casting, but this ain’t no Pulp Fiction. Unevenly paced and only intermittently funny. 2/5

LES MISERABLES
I’m not a fan of the musical, but I did get caught up in – and wrung out by – all the verve and emotional intensity. Best thing? Samantha Barks – unknown singer, phenomenal as Eponine. 3.5/5
