AMOUR
A harrowing, beautiful masterpiece, built around two achingly good performances. 5/5

ARGO
A likeable, competent thriller about the 1979 Iran hostage crisis. Last year’s best picture? Hardly, and its award has probably done it no favours in the long run. But lower your expectations and it’s a fun night out. 4/5

BEAUTIFUL CREATURES
Just a pallid Twilight imitation? Nope, a startlingly good one. Check out the supporting cast: Emma Thompson, Jeremy Irons and Viola Davis, all having fun. And the young leads (one of them Jane Campion’s daughter) are great. 3.5/5

I GIVE IT A YEAR
I wouldn’t give it five minutes. British relationship comedy. Charmless, witless, pointless. 2/5

SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK
A romcom pretending to be an issue movie. But it’s sweet and funny, and I couldn’t take my eyes off Jennifer Lawrence. 3.5/5

Films are rated out of 5: 1 = abysmal; 5 = amazing
