Nuclear test made North Korea “seethe with violent emotion and delight”

by Toby Manhire / 18 February, 2013
State newspaper says test a tribute to Kim Jong-il, a “treasured sword lighting an ever-victorious road”.

The North Korean newspaper Rodong Sinmun has published a long and defiant editorial in the wake of last week’s controversial nuclear test.

“The 3rd underground nuke test in the wake of satellite launch last year-end has brought this nation a biggest joy,” begins a 1,500-word leading article in the English-language version of the state mouthpiece.

Headlined “Forever with Kim Jong Il's History of Love for People”, the editorial says the test was aptly timed ahead of the 71st birthday of Kim Jong-il, father of and predecessor to the current leader Kim Jong-un.

Other events to mark the anniversary detailed in text and pictures by Rodong Sinmun (see above) included "Meritorious Persons Awarded Wrist Watches Bearing August Name of Kim Jong Il", "demonstration performance of synchronized swimming 'February in Yearning'", and "Kim Jong Un Sends Wild Honey to Maternity Hospital Again".

The editorial's core message appears to put paid to any suggestions that Kim Jong-un might depart from the bellicose course pursued by his father.

“Do all as did the great general [Jong-il],” comes the declamation, “and we will win – this is science.”

(Meanwhile, an editorial in the Chinese Global Post, referring to a "reckless North Korea", makes it clear that Beijing is less than impressed with developments.)

Here’s the thrust of the Rodong Sinmun editorial:

Our people miss him ever so much, their hearts firm with the resolve to carry out his idea and cause with credit. His was a revolutionary life that covered nearly 70 years, the life of a peerlessly great man who going through gravest ever known trials in modern history won victories of epochal significance and worked so many wonders ...

The whole of his life was a self-sacrifice and dedication to keep the happiness of the people blooming ... He worked a series of miracles, always believing in the people and relying on them, thus uniting our people into a harmonious whole.

It is his firm faith that the source of all victories lie in the strength of the people and that there is nothing impossible when the mental faculty of the army and the people is set in motion. Both in gay days and sorrowful days he would go among the masses, giving them his heart, warmth and affection ...

He illuminated all the roads ahead of our people with his clairvoyant wisdom and energetic study. His thoughts and theories are scientific guidelines reflecting the requirements of the revolution and the desire of the people most correctly and an encyclopedic series giving perfect answers to the theoretical and practical problems of all fields raised by the current era.

Now the world situation is complex and our revolution is faced with severe trials, but we have a treasured sword lighting an ever-victorious road ...

We succeeded in launching the Juche-based application satellite and the third underground nuclear test and thus demonstrated the general national power of the great country of Mt Paektu to the world.

The auspicious events that made the whole country seethe with violent emotion and delight are closely associated with the unusual clairvoyance and unremitting devotion of Kim Jong Il who provided a springboard for conquering space, looking ahead into the distant future of the country ...

He registered victory after victory in the anti-US confrontation and set an example of the world for the realization of independence of a country, a nation and popular masses, thereby greatly encouraging the progressive people ...

Today, the respected Kim Jong Un stands in the van of the march of Juche started from Mt Paektu.

Following the leadership of Kim Jong Un who carries out all work on the style of Kim Jong Il and perform miracles in revolution and construction, our people confidently look forward to a bight future of the country ...

Do all as did the great general, and we will win –this is science, and there is nothing impossible for us as long as we take the road indicated by him.

Whatever the changes in world situation, we must go straight along the road of independence, Songun and socialism that Kim Jong Il had come along.

The entire Party, whole army and all the people should closely unite around Kim Jong Un and uphold his leadership with sincere loyalty.

Aloft holding the militant slogan "Let us bring about a radical turn in the building of an economic giant with the same spirit and mettle as were displayed in conquering space!" we should vigorously sound the drum of the general charge ...

No force can block the vigorous steps of Sun's Korea blessed by the great generalissimos.
