REQUIEM FOR MY MOTHER

The day you died
I was in a house you’d never seen
And would have hated
With friends you’d have called
Pretentious, or perhaps not even that –
Irrelevant, at least to you

I listened to the St Matthew Passion
And thought of all that had and had not been,
Of what you had seen and heard that
No one, least of all a child
Should see and hear

And I thought of all the oceans
That divided us
And I knew this ending was all there was
You’d never reach out now
Or hear the music played in vain for you.
