Molten

Neighbourhood Bistro—Contemporary

There should be more places like Molten, where you can slip into the bar on a Tuesday evening for a decent glass of wine and a nibble, and if the mood takes you, end up in the adjoining, more formal restaurant for dinner. The dining-room menu suits the heritage surroundings: the food is understated, European and classic. And who could deny the joy of perfectly pink lamb rump swiped through striking green pea purée, with a little sour goats’ cheese to finish? How about golden bread-and-butter pudding with rum caramel? Mt Eden residents have been so lucky to have that luxury on their doorstep. With Molten on the market at press time, they will be hoping this neighbourhood treasure continues to meet the standard set by departing owner Sven Nielsen — and retains the inviting wine list, which includes several bottles for under $50.
