Podcast: The policeman, his dog and the premonition

Bruce and Cara at Training School. Photo / suppliedPolice dog handler Bruce Howat and his canine partner Cara were a crack crime-fighting duo – one of the finest man-dog teams on the force.

The pair were a team to be reckoned with on the thin blue line in the 70s and 80s.

It all came to an end one night when Bruce found himself on the wrong end of a 33cm-long hunting knife wielded by the most unlikely of criminals.

A story of the immense bond between a policeman and his dog – and the lengths they went to save each other.

Please be warned - there are some disturbing details of violence in here.

“I had a horrible premonition. I said, ‘Something really bad’s going to happen this week Senior.’ I can’t explain it.”

“I was drifting towards the light… then I remembered I hadn’t said goodbye to my girls and I thought, ‘I can’t do that to my daughters.’”
