The perfect can of beer: Great brews and great design

by Kate Richards / 10 August, 2017

Hats off to these breweries for their beautiful can art. Oh, and the contents aren’t bad either.

Pōhutukawa Ale, Piha Beer

Vintage floral fun

Designed by Tom Cottle, this is one of four in a series of cans which use simple block shapes alongside primary and secondary colours to reference the rugged west coast’s surf lifesaving culture, with this can celebrating the native pōhutukawa flower. A charming, slightly herbaceous, drop.

Elixir Bright Ale, Liberty Brewing Co.

The elixir of life

Liberty’s cans ran as a limited release for Meatstock – a no-glass event – last year, but arrive permanently in 2017. This medicine-bottle-style can, by Simon Courtney of Deflux Design Christchurch, houses a bright, crisp and clean ale.

Jungle Boogie, Funk Estate

Boogie on down

This blood orange sour beer was originally brewed for GABS beer festival 2016. The can was designed by Kapiti’s Luvly in collaboration with brewery co-owner Dylan Shearer. Suitably, the psychedelic, funky label reflects the hazy, citrusy beer inside.

India Pale Ale, Sawmill Brewery

A classic IPA

A once-tiny brewery – now all grown up – Sawmill was the only canned craft beer in New Zealand for nine years; its 330ml cans are now synonymous with the brand. The clean rose-gold design by Campbell Hooper is indicative of the brewery’s simple approach to beer-making.

Hops on Pointe Champagne Pilsner, Garage Project

All class and fine bead

Originally brewed for the Royal New Zealand Ballet, Garage Project developed its brief with designer Tim Gibson – the art “an ode to Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the Glasgow School of Art”. Try and spot the hidden dancer among the vines
