Inner-City Bistro—Israeli/Middle Eastern

Dining with a group is a breeze at Ima — it’s relaxed, homely and food is served in the middle of the table for everyone to help themselves. Israeli New Zealander Yael Shochat founded Ima (meaning “mother”) at a time when few restaurants were offering this particular type of feasting. Meat, seafood and vegetables are either slow-braised to tender perfection or cooked on the chargrill, and accompanied by sides such as tomato salad, Arab rice and charred carrots — all redolent with citrus, herbs and spices — for the whole table to share. It’s a lovely, generous, easy way to eat, and Ima’s suitability for big groups means there is always a lively atmosphere. Breakfast and lunch are more relaxed affairs, but certainly no less adventurous or hearty.

Slow-cooked free-range chicken meschan, finished on the grill, topped with onion, herbs, sumac and pine nuts.
