Still one of the best fine-dining restaurants in the city, headed up by arguably one of the most hard-working, exacting and charitable chefs in the game, Michael Meredith.The dégustation-only experience at Merediths feels ahead of its time. This is an undoubtedly progressive chef, one of the leading voices in the conversation about what New Zealand cuisine is and what it could be, so expect local, still somewhat unfashionable ingredients (though surely not for long) such as muttonbird and eel presented in surprising ways. Every dish is picture perfect, and the service is an ideal combination of formal and knowledgeable; they handle curveballs such as last-minute dietary requests like it’s nothing. This is a restaurant you’re likely to leave feeling replete and complete, and undoubtedly a little in awe.
