Neighbourhood Bistro—Neapolitan trattoria-style

With room for only 20 guests, booking is essential if you want to sample some of the city’s best Neapolitan food. The window seat looking out onto villagey Remuera Rd is wonderfully romantic, designed for sharing a spaghetti dish Lady and the Tramp-style. But we can’t go past head chef Flavia Nascimento’s signature deep-red and unctuous ragù napoletano, which simmers away all day in the small open kitchen. The giant tubes of rigatoni it’s served on catch most of the sauce, but you’ll still want to lick the plate. As with all good Italian food, you won’t care that each bite’s the same when that means pillowy gnocchi with rich gorgonzola and walnut sauce, or perfumed, perfectly al dente seafood risotto. Leave the wine to your host, the famously assertive Gaetano Spinosa — he likes to choose for his guests.
