The Oyster Inn

Destination Restaurant—Seaside village bistro in boutique hotel

Could there be a better time and place to devour Waiheke oysters from Te Matuku or gurnard from the Hauraki Gulf than on the inn’s veranda overlooking the sea during a relaxed weekend lunch? Unlikely. There are comforting classics on offer, too, such as a wickedly cheesy macaroni, along with flavour bombs such as burrata with Curious Croppers heirloom tomatoes, basil and vincotto. But really, it’s the seafood that’s the standout at this beachy bolthole on Oneroa’s main drag, where the floor crew maintain a casual coastal vibe even when the kitchen is pumping (which is often). The island takes centre stage on a compelling drinks list, too, not only in the wine department but also with non-alcoholic options (Waiheke Island Brewery’s ginger beer is very gingery and very good).

A favourite dish
Beer-battered Hauraki Gulf fish and triple-cooked chips.
